I love curry leaves | kadi patta for the amazing taste and smell it brings to our dishes, the wonderful health benefits it offers, both externally and internally and for it’s easy availability. Curry leaves have amazing health benefits and medicinal uses for hair, skin and face. Curry leaves aids hair growth, treats anemia, aids weight loss and reduces high cholesterol.

It is good for diabetic patients, treats wounds and blemishes when used for skin and face care, treats gum diseases and also helps reduce anxiety and stress! Curry leaves can also be used by everyone; babies, children, aged and pregnant women will all benefit from including curry leaves in their diet regularly. We use curry leaf in the form of curry leaf oil, curry leaf tea and curry leaf powder.

Curry Leaves Botanical & Common Names:

The botanical name of curry leaves is Muraaya Koenigii | Bergera Koenigii. Curry leaves are called Kadi Patta | Kari Patta | Curry Patta| Meetha Neem (since it resembles neem leaves) in Hindi, Karuvepillai in Tamil, Karivepaku in Telugu, Karibevu in Kannada, Kari Patta in Gujarati, Kariveppila in Malayalam, Kari Pata in Bengali, Kari Pate in Punjabi, Kadhipatta in Marathi, Karapincha in Sinhalese and Daun Kari in Malaysia.

Curry Leaf Plant:

Curry leaf is native to India and Sri Lanka but now it is cultivated in many countries. Almost all the parts of curry leaves have been used in ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years, it is a herb that can be had daily without any side effects but gives amazing health benefits.

We have always had curry plant at home, when I was younger it was one of my favorite plants as I used to love picking and eating curry leaf plant fruits. The small round dark fruits have a wonderful sweet taste with a unique fragrance. I use curry leaves in practically all my dishes, curry leaves are very fragrant and like coriander leaves  it adds a nice aroma to the dish.

Curry Leaves Nutrition:

Curry leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals, all very essential for keeping us in peak health. Curry leaves are very rich in calcium, iron and protein, when I was younger, I was always advised to eat the curry leaves along with the gravy. 100 grams of curry leaves have 1 gram of fat, 6 grams of fiber, 57 mg of phosphors, 44 mg of magnesium, .15 mg of manganese, .006 mg of chromium, 6.1 mg of protein, 18 grams of carbs, 830 mg of calcium, .93 mg of iron, 0.1 mg of copper, 0.2 mg of zinc, 4 mg of vitamin C, 2.3 mg of niacin and o.08 of thiamine.

1. Anti Diabetic Properties:

Curry leaves have significant anti diabetic properties and helps reduce high blood sugar levels. It is an ingredient that all diabetic patients should include in their diet regularly without fail. In a study done on rats, ethanol extract of curry leaves reduced blood sugar levels of diabetic rats equal to regular diabetic medications. You can read the study that proves this claim here. 

2. Larvicidal Properties:

An interesting use of curry leaf extract is it’s larvicidal properties against Culex Quinquefasciatus and Anopheles Gambiae variety mosquitoes which are some of the primary varieties that spread malaria in Africa. And what was even more interesting was that the extract got from curry leaves growing in semi arid regions exhibited the highest larvicidal properties than other regions.

3. Treats Gum Diseases:

Curry leaf extract has been proven to be effective in reducing inflammation of the gums if used as a mouth wash. What is more wonderful is it is it is equally effective like commercial available mouth washes. To use curry leaves as a mouth wash, boil curry leaves with water and salt and use it as a mouth rinse.

4. Treats Amnesia:

Another lesser known but 2 very interesting uses of curry leaves is it’s anti amnesic activity. When mice were regularly given curry leaves for period of 30 days, the memory scores showed reduced amnesia that was induced in both young and adult mice. 5. Anti Cancer Properties:

Koenimbin, one of the major bioactive compound of curry leaves has been proven to be effective against prostate cancer and breast cancer. Koenimbin, extracted from curry leaves significantly prevented the growth cancer cells. It also has been shown to decrease the recurrence of cancer and so patients who are under remission after prostate cancer treatment also will benefit consuming curry leaves. Also certain alkaloids like murrayazoline present in curry leaves prevents colon cancer too.

6. Anti Anxiety and Antidepressant Properties

Since curry leaves are rich in antioxidants, it helps reduce oxidative stress which plays an important role in many neurobehavioral disorders like anxiety and depression that many of us suffer now. Seven piranocarbazoles were isolated from curry leaves. Out of the seven, three exhibited significant antibacterial properties and one exhibited anti fungal properties. Streptococcus aureus, klebsiella pneumonia are some of the bacterial strains that curry leaves effectively inhibits.

9. Improves Nutritional Content Of Foods

Curry leaf powder when added to Idli batter, increased the calcium content of idlis by 10 times and the fiber content increased by 18%. Since curry leaves have antimicrobial properties, it increased the shelf life of idli batter from 2 to 5 days when stored at room temperature.

10. Helps With Weight Loss

Nowadays curry leaf is becoming popular as a weight loss food. The reason for it is mahanimbine, one of the major alkaloids found in curry leaves. I prefer to use the curry leaves from my garden as I know it is not sprayed with pesticides. Always use curry leaves that are not sprayed with pesticides and if possible try growing a curry leaf plant at home. In India, fresh curry leaves are available in all the markets cheaply throughout the year as we Indians use it a lot in all our cooking. If you are living abroad, you can buy organic dried curry leaves and use it everyday in cooking, add the dried leaves in oil while seasoning the gravies for best flavor.

How To Store | Freeze Curry Leaves?

If you can’t get fresh curry leaves daily, try freezing the curry leaves. To freeze, collect fresh, pesticide free curry leaves, wash and spread it on a plate to shade dry completely free of moisture. Then fry with little amount of homemade ghee till crisp, let cool and store in a zip lock bag in the freezer. Whenever you want to use it, add the frozen curry leaves to the oil while seasoning.

1. Curry Leaf Powder | Kadi Patta Powder:

We make curry leaf powder regularly at home by frying curry leaves in little oil along with spices like dry red chillies, urad dhal, asafoetida, tamarind and salt and then powdering in a dry mixer jar to get a powder. This powder can be had with rice everyday along with little homemade ghee for lunch. If we start using curry leaves regularly in our diet, we won’t suffer from anemia which is affecting major part of the women nowadays

2. Raw Curry Leaf Juice:

This is one of our favorite traditional drinks that we regularly make at home and serve it to guests during hot summers. For the juice take fresh curry leaves and pound them in mixer with little cumin seeds to a very fine paste. Mix it with thin fresh buttermilk that is not sour along with salt. A very healthy refreshing juice | drink, it is also my son’s favorite drink 🙂

3. Curry Leaf Tea:

For curry leaves tea, boil lightly pounded curry leaves and cumin seeds in water till the color of the water changes and drink. Curry leaves is an effective remedy for treating indigestion and diarrhea. For the remedy, fry cumin seeds in a little bit of ghee and then add the curry leaves. Add a cup of water and 1/2 tsp of dry ginger powder. Let it simmer for a few minutes, strain and cool. This mixture, if taken once gives good relief from indigestion and diarrhea. It can be sweetened with honey or jaggery too.

Regular consumption of curry leaves has been proven to lower blood sugar levels. It is a good idea for diabetic patients to include curry leaves in the diet. Make curry leaf powder and try to include it in the diet everyday. Another good idea for consuming curry leaves is by mixing the curry leaf powder with buttermilk and salt.

Many of you must have been advised by elders when you were young to include curry leaves to prevent anemia. That is because curry leaves are rich source of iron that is easily absorbed by the body. 100gm of curry leaves has around .930 mg of iron, it is also rich in calcium and other essential vitamins to keep our body healthy.

A relative of mine suggested this method of taking curry leaves daily to get good relief from anemia:  Everyday soak a handful of curry leaves and a tsp of methi seeds in little bit of fresh yogurt for 1/2 an hour and have it in the early morning. She said she could see a good difference after regularly consuming this mixture. Make sure that the curd is not sour.

A study conducted on the effects of curry leaves on our health has proved that it is very effective in reducing the cholesterol and thus protects us from heart disease. Instead of eating curry leaves after we get the disease, it is best done as a preventive measure.

I have never ever cooked without curry leaves. I love the smell and taste it brings to dishes and gravies. To get the maximum flavor, try to add it while seasoning so that it releases it’s wonderful aroma. For certain gravies and rasam, it is added at the end too. Encourage young children to eat the gravies along with curry leaves. Once they develop the habit of eating the curry leaves when they are young, they will continue to do it all their life.
