Homemade Curry Leaves Hair Oil for Hair Growth & Premature Greying !

Homemade Curry Leaves Hair Oil

Curry leaves hair oil also called Kadi Patta oil in Hindi and Karuveppilai oil in Tamil has amazing hair benefits and we make it by mixing curry leaves with coconut oil. We use it to treat premature greying of the hair and to arrest hair fall. Our neighbor in our village used to collect curry leaves from our farm regularly. One day when I was talking to her, she mentioned about this curry leaf hair oil.

She said that she has been using this oil regularly and it has helped treat her premature greying along with promoting hair growth significantly. She taught me the way she makes the oil and it is so very easy to make the curry leaf hair oil using her method. Just two ingredients and you have a very nice hair oil in your hands. But the quality of the ingredients are very important.

Curry Leaves Hair Oil Ingredients:

I always use homemade unrefined pure coconut oil to make this oil, every year in summer we grind our own coconut oil from the coconuts in our farm for that years use in cooking. You can also use virgin coconut oil which is readily available everywhere now. Use freshly plucked curry leaves which is not sprayed with pesticides. Curry leaves should be cleaned thoroughly and dried in the shade to remove moisture. If there is moisture in curry leaves, the oil will turn rancid very soon. This oil is light green in color and has a very nice smell, I really love the smell of this curry leaf hair oil.

Curry Leaves Hair Oil Benefits:

  • Curry leaves oil when used regularly as a massage oil nourishes the scalp and strengthens the hair follicles. If you are suffering from hair fall, I would suggest using this oil regularly.
  • It is one of the best home remedy for treating premature greying of the hair. Like I have mentioned before I have seen it personally work in reversing grey hair. But try to start using this oil as early as possible to see results.
  • When we massage our scalp with curly hair oil made with pesticide free curry leaves and pure unrefined coconut oil, it helps improve blood circulation in the scalp thus promoting new hair growth.
  • It is also one of the safest and mildest herbal hair oils that we can make at home. Since it is very mild, it can be safely used for young children too.
  • If you are suffering from frizzy and dry hair, I would suggest using curry leaf hair oil regularly. Within just one or two uses your hair will become super soft and silky. You can also use this curry leaf hair oil as a pre shampoo treatment too.

Curry Leaf Hair Oil Recipe:

METHOD:
1. First clean the curry leaves in water and dry it in shade spread on top of a plate or kitchen cloth till there is no moisture left.

2.Take 1 cup of coconut oil in a pan and heat it but make sure not to heat it to smoking point.

3. Once the oil is hot, add all the curry leaves at once and switch off the flame immediately.

4. Let the oil cool in the pan, the leaves will darken a bit once the oil cools.

4. Once the oil is completely cool, pour it in glass bottles along with the leaves. The only important thing here is that the leaves should be completely immersed in oil. If the leaves pop out of oil, the oil will turn rancid soon.

NOTES:

  • This curry leaf hair oil keeps well for few months, but make sure the leaves are fully immersed in the oil.
  • Make the oil using only unrefined coconut oil.
  • Make sure to use fresh curry leaves for best results.
  • Also make sure that curry leaves don’t burn.
  • If properly made, the oil will last well for almost a year at room temperature.

Hi Ramya, I prepared the curry leaves oil & it's brown can I still use it. My hair is falling like crazy fm past 1 year. My blood work is all normal, what can I do to stop my hair fall. Pls help

I think you overheated the oil and as far as the oil does not smell burnt you can continue using it. Try applying fenugreek hair mask from the blog weekly thrice, this mask controls hair fall very quickly. Also try to reduce stress as stress is also one of the major factor for hair fall. You can also try oil bath (method in the blog) to relax…

You can use both the curry leaves tea and the mask. Curry leaf tea can be consumed daily for months together without any side effects…

Usually regular application of fenugreek hair mask arrests hair fall very soon (within 2 weeks of application but the time may from from person to person). Continue applying the hair mask, have oil bath regularly, reduce stress and eat healthy, definitely you will find your hair growing back very soon. You can also take ashwagandha for hair growth…

Hello,I just tried making this oil but i might've overheated the oil – when i put the leaves in they popped and immediately curled and turned dark, like almost if they'd fry, but the oil was not boiling before i put them in. I took out the pan out of the oven right away. Is that a problem? Also another question, how often should/can i use it? Also, will the coconut oil stay liquid at room temperature? – I used organic paste type oil..Thanks! I'm looking forward to trying this. 🙂

Hi, I think the oil was way too hot, when you added the curry leaves and try heating the oil in medium flame. You can use this oil even every day. If the temperature drops, it might solidify, in that case keep the bottle in warm water for few minutes.

Thanks for the reply. Should I discard that oil mix for making it too hot and make a new one, or will it still have the desired properties? Also, what's the correct/best way to apply it? Thanks again!

    March 13, 2014 / 7:04 am

If the oil is burnt, then I think you should discard it. To apply, take a little bit of oil and massage into your scalp well and let it soak for some time before having your hair wash. This oil also strengthens and conditions the hair well.

Hi! Though the question is asked to Ramaiya, who is very kind to share the information, I am eager to share the cure for dandruff. I got rid of the problem after two three wash. Oil your hair regularly at least 30 minutes before washing. After shampooing apply conditioner as per your hair type. Leave it for five minutes, with the help of 1/4 cup of tolerably hot water massage your hair not the scalp with soft movements for two minutes . Then wash with normal water. Hot or even lukewarm water strictly no no even in winters after conditioning. Wrap hair into a towel around. Always use fresh towel for washed hair and also change pillow cover the day you wash hair. Very important. Clean your comb also with detergent and an old toothbrush. Twice a month apply onion juice( peel and grind one big onion and sieve) on the scalp 20 minutes before shampooing and conditioning hair. Don't apply oil on the day using onion juice. Send me your feedback, if you feel like , on my mail id sadhna.capri@gmail.com

This oil is best applied everyday to treat premature greying. You can leave it on if you don't mind greasy hair, else you can oil the hair previous night and wash it off the next day. You have to use shampoo to wash it off, try to use a mild herbal shampoo…..

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      January 29, 2015 / 4:15 pm

Hi Saritha,My neighbor completely reversed her greying hair but the main thing is to be very regular with the oil application. She was using it for years. The easiest way to find whether the oil is at the right temperature is by adding a single curry leaf, it should sizzle immediately and never heat till the oil smokes, the leaves will burn. After a few trials you will be able to easily get the temperature right. For hair volume, the only natural treatments that works are hair massage with homemade oils, hair packs coupled with great diet and stress free life…

I was making my own homemade shampoos and soaps for some time and I was ph testing every store bought product to compare. What I found was almost all the branded shampoos are the same, no matter what they claim. If you feel the shampoo you are using does not dry your hair or cause any undue hair fall then it is fine. Also if you could get arappu powder in your place, give it a try. I am sure you will like it more than store bought shampoos…

Hi Ramya. My son has gray hair and he's only 8 years old. Read a lot of blog on treating premature gray hair with coconut oil with curry leaves so I tried making the coconut oil wid the leaves. When I checked the oil the following day, the coconut oil became soild. can I warm it up with water and still use it? how often should i put it on my son's hair and how long should i let it stay before rinsing it. hoping this will work on my son's gray hair. he's too young to have gray hair. Thank you for your time.

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      April 21, 2015 / 5:08 am

Hi, you can warm it up and use, even mine has solidified. But don't heat the oil each time, keep the bottle under sunlight or in hot water for few minutes. Please don't worry, my neighbor reversed her premature greying at the age of 28, so for your son, it will be much quicker. But she used the oil every single day. If he does not mind applying the oil everyday, massage it well in the scalp everyday for best results, leave it on overnight and rinse it off the next day morning. It might take a few months but it will work….

Hi Uma, Try heating unrefined sesame oil with dry ginger and massage it in the scalp. Dry ginger will improve the circulation but at the same time, it will prevent you from catching cold easily. Also try turmeric and coconut oil remedy from the blog for drying your hair, that is what we do for babies after hair wash to prevent them from catching cold……

For how much time the oil should be heated? Doesn't it effects the properties of cold pressed oil ?

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      April 24, 2015 / 4:48 pm

The oil should be heated slightly (the heating time will vary depending on the size of the vessel, the type of vessel and the amount of oil), else the leaves will burn. Since we don't heat it to very high temperatures, it usually does not affect the properties….

For Alopecia, try drinking green tea as it will block DHT which is the main reason for alopecia. Also to increase the blood flow in the hair follicles, try fenugreek hair mask from the blog regularly. you can also try pumpkin seed oil as it is also a very good DHT blocker……….

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran

Hi Ramya, Thanks for so much detailed information. I have made this oil. However, to preserve this oil, I have thrown away the curry leaves used for boiling. Is that okay? Plus, I am just in my 30s – do you think this oil will help reverse the gray hair ? I have suddenly bumped up the counts on my gray hair.

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      May 13, 2015 / 5:01 pm

Hi Sonia, You can use the oil even if you have discarded the leaves but next time you make the oil preserve the leaves in the oil. As we age the reversal might take longer but this oil will definitely prevent new grey hairs from forming and in addition it conditions the hair well too……..

I think the coconut oil has solidified, keep the oil under hot sun for an hour. If the the residue fully dissolves then you can continue using it. If on the other hand it does not dissolve then I think the oil has turned rancid due to moisture either in the bottle or when handling and it is best to discard it…

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      July 22, 2015 / 4:59 pm

I would suggest that you check for deficiencies especially anemia as most of us Indian women are anemic without realizing it and start taking supplements accordingly. Then start applying any one of the homemade hair oils and hair packs from the blog regularly to condition and strengthen the hair. Also try to relax and drink plenty of water…

  86. Ramya Venkateshwaran
    July 19, 2015 / 5:04 pm

Sometimes if the climate is cold, the oil will solidify at the bottom which is normal. This oil rarely turns bad unless the curry leaves pop out of the oil or it has been months since it is made. I would suggest that you sun dry the oil and see if the residue dissolves. If it dissolves, continue using it and make sure the curry leaves are fully immersed in the oil. If on the other hand the residue floats on top and does not dissolve, discard the oil….

Unfortunately not only scalp problems but stress, deficiencies, medication side effects, illnesses also cause hair fall. If it is for scalp infection alone the oil mentioned will work well as garlic treats scalp infections but along with it a stress free life and a great diet is very very important to arrest hair fall….

Hi, Bharathi, I am very sorry for the late reply. I would suggest using this curry leaf oil regularly. Try to eat nutritiously and try using a hair mask weekly twice (you can choose any one of the hair masks from the blog). Also consider taking supplements for a few months….

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      August 21, 2015 / 5:57 pm

You can add 10 sprigs of curry leaves for 2 cups of oil but when storing the oil make sure the curry leaves are not popping out of the oil else the oil will turn rancid soon (you can remove some of the leaves after making the oil if they pop out)…

Hi RamyaI am 23 yrs old and facing severe hairfall from past 25 days I dont know the exact reason but guessing it might be due to change of shampoo.Currently I am using the curry leaves oil which u mentioned and leaving it overnight and rinsing it with Biotique Green Apple Shampoo. How much tym vl it take to reduce hair fall?:(is there anything else to follow?

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      August 27, 2015 / 5:15 pm

Hi Preethika, give it at least 2 to 3 weeks to see results. In the mean time check for any deficiencies or notice whether you are stressed or not eating properly, all these might cause hair fall too..

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      August 27, 2015 / 5:19 pm

I am surprised that the oil didn't turn green because it usually does! Did you heat the oil enough before adding the leaves? This oil is one of the best methods for treating premature greying and I would suggest giving it a try…

Hi Ramya,I am loosing my hairs day by day.For this somebody had suggested me that i should take a container full with mustard oil and put 2-3 amla into that and keep it for few days and then apply on my hairs.Pls confirm me if this will help in making the hairs strong and remove baldness.Regards,Vineet

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      August 28, 2015 / 4:18 pm

Hi, if you add the whole amla into the oil, it won't release it's essence into the oil. I would suggest that you try the amla oil from the blog. If you have a family history of baldness then external application can go only so far. I would suggest trying out natural DHT (the hormone that causes baldness) blockers like saw palmetto, green tea, etc. If you start taking DHT blockers along with external applications, you will see results very quickly…

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      September 4, 2015 / 6:02 am

If you have good sunlight, it will take about 3 days of drying under direct sunlight. Make sure to dry the curry leaves before adding it to the oil. Yes, eating curry leaves is said to help in premature greying but I am sorry I can't pinpoint the time frame as it varies from person to person. But with regular use, you will see results…

Hello, I couldn't find fresh curry leaves (I'm in the UK) so I made the oil with dried curry leaves I bought. Is this ok? Also, I followed a different method as I hadn't read your blog. I added the leaves to cold oil then heated it up and heated it till the leaves turned brown. Is this ok or should I throw away the oil? Should we warm up the oil before applying it each time we use it? Also, if you don't shampoo your hair after using it and only rinse it, and then apply oil again, will it not become too greasy?

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      September 12, 2015 / 3:03 am

Hi, as far as the leaves are not burnt, the oil is good to use, don't throw it away. I usually don't warm the oil, but if you prefer a warm oil massage, take only the required amount and warm it up in low flame. The greasiness depends on how much oil we use and the type of hair. If we use very very little oil, then we don't notice the greasiness at all but if we use a lot and don't shampoo after using the oil, the hair will be greasy. If you are prefer having hair wash after using the oil, apply and wait for an hour and then wash it off..

The main problem with hair loss is finding the root cause of the problem. If we find out the reason we can easily rectify it. Usually with a good diet and regular hair massage the hair fall stops but if it still does not, check 1. Whether any medicines2. Stress3. Scalp infections4. Illnesses5. Hereditary is causing it.Try to pinpoint the problem in the mean time, I would suggest continuing with the oil application as it conditions the hair well and strengthens the hair roots too. I would also suggest using fenugreek hair mask from the blog weekly twice…

Hi Ramya, I made this oil, it really smells good, but the problem is it's hard to wash out. I use regular shampoo and it took 3 washes to get my hair back to not greasy look(I have long hair). I noticed in comments that nobody talks about it, why so? how do you do wash it out without having problems? thank you in advance

Hi Elena, I am really surprised to hear that this oil does not wash out of the hair as coconut oil washes off the hair pretty quickly. This is the oil all of us use at home too and none of us have the problem. Did you use any other oil along with coconut oil?

I am sorry that you didn't see a positive difference after using curry leaf oil. If the premature greying is in the starting stages you will see good difference within 6 months. Is your hair completely grey or is the premature greying just starting? Also I would still suggest continue using the oil as it also conditions the hair really well

Hi Ramya,I prepared the oil the other way.. I heated the oil and curry leaves till they turned dark and i strained it and stored in the bottle without the leaves. The leaves had turned brown. Is this way the oil is usable for couple of months. If we do not pour the leaves in the oil, how can the oil be preserved? Is it necessary to use glass bottle for storage or can we use a plastic air tight container? Please help.

Thanks a lot for your kind words, means a lot to me. In my experience, curry leaves, bhringraj and henna are the best for treating premature greying, you can either use this curry leaf oil regularly or try a homemade oil using all the above mentioned 3 herbs (I would suggest making the oil using direct sunlight method and also use virgin coconut oil & fresh herbs for best results), you can find the recipe for it here

hello, i've been using this for a year now on my beard. the oils i make tho last very few days, probably about 3-4 days at most and then the odor turns rancid and i throw them out, so i make new ones every 4-5 days and i make in smaller quantities. it might be because i don't dry in the shade the leaves, i just wash them well and then dry with a towel. i haven't seen enough results but keep using it almost every night, i rub my beard with it keep it overnight about 4-5 times a week. still get tons of white beard hairs popping and popping. is there anything i'm doing wrong?

Hello Madam Ramya. Greetings from NW Kansas in the USA. I was new to the benefits of Curry leaf. Thank you very much for your informative site and the generosity of your spirit in sharing your knowledge. Your curry leaf oil recipe has greatly enhanced the quality of my hair. Growth is much quicker, and while my natural color is dark brown, it has become even DARKER ! Also, summer here has brutal heat. I have always drank buttermilk in hot weather, but your advice of using curry leaf in the diet has changed plain buttermilk to the divine. I dress up the buttermilk with ground curry leaf, cumin, pink salt and black pepper, one feels refreshed immediately. I have been able to procure good quality dried curry leaf on line and I am waiting for a fresh Curry plant to be delivered. I take the benefits of Curry leaf very seriously. Thank you again. Kindest regards from America, Judy

You mentioned you wash the hair every other day (not twice a week Tuesday and Friday due to the pollution), and this oil is left in the hair not washed out usually.

On the days you don’t wash your hair with herbal shampoo or herbal paste, do you still wash the hair with plain water or you just leave the hair dry not allowing it to get wet, either wearing a hair cap or just avoiding the water, and you wash the body instead? Then afterwards you add oil to the dry hair?

I’m just trying to understand the full and complete process…..
