If you are a regular reader of wildturmeric blog, you must have noticed that I use vitamin E regularly in most of my preparations. If you look at the ingredients list in most of the store bought creams, vitamin E will always be present. There is a reason why it is used so much in skin care, it is an amazing antioxidant that helps fight off free radicals very effectively. From treating dry skin and acne to reducing wrinkles, it does have wide uses.
What Are Vitamin E Capsules?
Vitamin E is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that plays a very important role in our body. Its main role is as an antioxidant, free radical damage is responsible for many health conditions like heart disease, cancers, bad vision, etc so we must consume antioxidant-rich foods daily. Foods like nuts, fruits, and vegetables are rich sources of vitamin E, if you are deficient, you can consume vitamin E in capsule form too.
Vitamin E Capsules For Skin Benefits:
1. For Scars:
There is a popular belief that vitamin E is very effective for fading scars, but clinical studies are inconclusive about this claim. In a review of 6 studies on using vitamin E for treating scars, three studies reported a significant improvement in appearance using topical application of vitamin E.
Of the three studies, one was on children, and two studies were done on adults. However, the studies on adults were combination therapies (vitamin E was used along with other ingredients). The rest of the three studies showed no significant improvement in scar appearance.
Two of the six studies even reported adverse reactions to topical vitamin E applications like contact dermatitis, itching, and rashes. Though it is confusing, If you don’t experience any adverse effects using vitamin E, I would suggest including it in your scar treatments.
2. For Lips
Vitamin e oil is also great for chapped and dry lips as it is very moisturizing. During winter months, my lips turn dry and start bleeding. I add vitamin E oil to lips serum and apply it on my lips, within 2 to 3 days, my lips are back to normal! You can also add it to lip oils, to make a simple lip oil, mix 1 part cold-pressed sweet almond oil to 1/8 part cold-pressed castor oil in a bowl. Add in the contents of 1 vitamin E capsule and mix well.
3. For Dark Circles
Vitamin E oil is generally added to eye creams to reduce dark circles. I found only one study that supports this claim, but the treatment was combination therapy.
For the study 57 adult Japanese volunteers with dark circles and wrinkles were given a gel containing 2% phytonadione, 0.1% retinol, 0.1% vitamin C, and 0.1% vitamin E. After 8 weeks, there was a reduction in dark circles.
We have to note that the amount of vitamin E used in the study was very less and on top of that, it is a combination treatment too. In my personal experience, I find adding vitamin E to eye treatments decreases wrinkles and reduces dark circles to a certain extent.
4. Anti-Aging Properties
Many of the anti-aging creams found in the markets contain 0.5% to 1% of vitamin E oil, this is because of its antioxidant properties. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) decreases collagen production and increases GAG synthesis leading to premature ageing of our skin. Studies have proven that antioxidants like vitamin e help reduce oxidative damage significantly by fighting off free radicals.
5. Anti Acne
Topical application of vitamin E has been proven to be effective against acne but all three studies that I could find were combination treatments. In the first study, vitamin A was used along with vitamin E and it was effective in treating acne. In the second study, vitamin E was combined with zinc and lactoferrin, this combination also was found to be effective. The third study was a combination was zinc and vitamin E which was also found to be effective.
6. Hyperpigmentation
Dark patches on the skin are caused by the production of too much melanin, this condition is generally called melasma. Studies show that vitamin E has only minimal effect in treating hyperpigmentation. However vitamin E has been proven to have a protective effect on our skin, it protects the skin against UVA and UVB radiation and also air pollution, this is due to the high amounts of antioxidants present in it.
Internal Consumption and Skincare:
Internal consumption of vitamin E capsules has been proven to be effective in certain skin conditions like yellow nail syndrome, subcorneal pustular dermatoses, cutaneous amyloidosis, atopic dermatitis, epidermolysis bullosa, scleroderma, and acne.
Vitamin E Side Effects:
The daily requirement of vitamin E can be easily achieved through diet itself, take vitamin E oil internally only if you are deficient in it. If you are planning on taking vitamin E oil as a daily supplement, try not to take more than the daily recommended dosage of 15 mg, I would also suggest consulting a physician for the correct dosage.
Daily consuming large doses of vitamin E oil can have the worst adverse effects and can be associated with the risk of early death and prostate cancer. Vitamin E oil also might interfere with coumarin-based anticoagulant medications.
Topical application usually does not cause any problems but some adverse reactions like rash and itching have been reported. If you experience rash or itching after using vitamin E capsules, discontinue use.
