Turmeric has amazing anti bacterial properties and has been used to treat all skin problems including pimples from ancient times in India. I have always seen my aunts and grandmothers use turmeric for skin care on a day to day basis.
Almost every bathroom in our village will have a turmeric and small stone. When women go for bathing, they rub the turmeric on the stone along with the little thick rice water till they get a smooth paste.
Then we rub it all over our face, massage for a few seconds and then wash it off. This simple method has amazing skin benefits, it greatly helps prevent pimples and also helps treat existing ones. If you have pimple scars, it lightens them as well.
Which Turmeric To Use For Treating Pimples?
How To Make Turmeric Paste For Pimples?
I prefer to make my own turmeric paste at home instead of buying store bought turmeric powders. I find store bought turmeric powders stain the skin really yellow which makes me wonder whether artificial colors are added to them.
To make your own turmeric paste for skin care, soak a turmeric in hot water for a few minutes. Now take a rough stone and rub the turmeric on it well along with little water till you get enough paste. This way you will get unadulterated turmeric paste for skin care.
Since I love making my own creams and face packs, I have tried turmeric face pack, turmeric cream and turmeric oil at home. They all work well but use them regularly to see fast results. I have given all the recipes I have tried over the years below, choose the one you like and use regularly.
5 Top Ways To Use Turmeric For Treating Pimples:
1. Turmeric, Tomato & Milk Face Mask:
Take 1 tsp besan also called as gram flour in a bowl. Add in 1/2 tsp turmeric powder to it. Add in a tsp of tomato juice to it, finally add in enough milk to form a paste and use it as a face pack. To use, apply all over the face and neck, wait for 10 minutes before washing it off with plain water.
2. Turmeric Oil:
To make turmeric oil, take a turmeric and rub it on a rough stone along with little water to get a smooth paste. Now heat 1/4 cup unrefined coconut oil along with 1 tbsp of turmeric paste, it will immediately start spluttering. Once the spluttering sound stops, remove and strain. To use, massage this oil regularly before bath.
3. Turmeric & Aloe Vera Cream For Acne:
Turmeric creams are wonderful for lightening scars and dark spots and you can make them easily at home. I make it with aloe vera gel, turmeric powder and rice water and you can find the recipe for it here.
4. Turmeric Powder & Honey For Acne:
Turmeric powder mixed with honey and rice water is also wonderful for both treating acne and lightening scars. To make rice water, while making rice, boil it with more water than you normally do and strain out the excess water. To use, apply a thin coat all over the face, wait for 15 minutes before washing it off.
5. Turmeric Bath Powder:
I love homemade bath powders. Homemade bath powders are always made with turmeric as a base. They are fragrant, keeps the skin blemish free and lightens scars and blemishes really well. If you have dry skin, mix bath powder with thick creamy rice water for using else use rose water or plain water to mix. You can find the recipe for it here.

Dear Ramya, I liked this recipe very much and I want to use this recipe for making "coconut oil boiled with turmeric and tulsi leaves mixture"….Same as you have shown in making "coconut oil with turmeric" for massaging girl babies. Can I make the same as using this recipe i.e adding extra tulsi leaves paste while boiling the coconut oil? i have made the coconut oil adding turmeric paste before. and I am using it for my acne on face. So after reading your this recipe, I thought I will add fresh tulsi leaves paste also into the boiling the coconut oil along with the fresh turmeric root paste so that the coconut oil will get the extracts from both the turmeric as well as the tulsi leaves. I don't want to make the fresh paste as shown by you above here as I fell it has be mae daily fresh and I don't have that much time as I have a small baby at home. So can you please tell me whether I can use this recipe for making coconut oil with turmeric and tulsi leaves? Also I want to know-1. whether I can use fresh turmeric roots instead of organic dry turmeric roots…as I feel dry turmeric roots will get more time to give its paste.2. can I grind the fresh turmeric roots in mixer without using water as the fresh turmeric roots will have the water content in it? 3. in the same mixer, can I grind the fresh tulsi leaves and make its paste? 4. and then can I add both the turmer as well as the tulsi leaves paste while coconut oil is boiling?5. please tell me how much of fresh turmeric roots and how much of fresh tulsi leaves I have to use for making its paste for adding into boiling coconut oil.Thank you so much for the wonderful recipe. I am making the same recipe as you said above, thank you so much for sharing your recipe. I love natural remedies. Please reply back with your tips and suggestions.God bless.
Hi, You can use this recipe for making the oil, which I feel is a very good idea. Fresh turmeric root can be substituted for dry turmeric. Grinding the turmeric without water will actually prevent the oil from spoiling sooner. You can also grind the tulsi leaves like you mentioned. For a cup of oil, take around 1/4 cup of tulsi leaves and 1 big fresh turmeric root and make the oil.
Hi! Thus it have to be hot water???
Hi Rachel, Just regular temperature water will do. If the turmeric is very hard to rub on the stone, you can soak it in hot water for a few minutes. It will make it easy to rub into a paste…..
will it work if I just use powder form of everything and make it into a paste with coconut oil?
Hi, I have not tried with powders, but if they are of good quality, I am sure they will work too…
Can you infuse it with coconut oil and use it when it hardens?
Hi Cheryl, You can infuse it but I don't think it will be as effective as the fresh paste….
Great remedy! Loved your mortar and pestel where did you get it in Coimbatore?
It is actually a very old weighing stone…:)
How long do I leave the mask on?
Leave it on till the mask dries completely….
I've kasturi manjal! How can I get rid off of acnes? iS the turmeric you mentioned is wild turmeric ?
I used ordinary turmeric but kasturi manjal will work well too, try this remedy regularly to get rid of acne…..
I took cooking turmeric powder in the pantry mixed it with water to make a paste and applied on pimple above chest area. Maybe I applied too much? It wasn't sticking to the skin so I kept applying more and more paste. Left it on overnight. Maybe I should have washed it as soon as it dried not overnight. The pimple diminished but the area became very sensitive to Heat especially hot sun and even heat from hot clothes out of the dryer placed on skin…any heat for past few months.I have no idea how to cool the area off to soothe it so it's not sensitive and burning when exposed to heat but remains cool and heat tolerant. I have used turmeric on skin before on the face but I think chest area is more sensitive and applied too much. How to permanently cool down the area and what is the correct amount to use so it doesn't burn? I don't know what else I did wrong please inform.
And I left it on overnight I didn't wash it after it dried so maybe I left it on for too long. And I perhaps used too much but it wasn't sticking on the skin which is why I put more on. Anyhow it has be burning up for sometime….and I'm scared to go out into hot sun for few months now…
I didn't have thulasi I just used the cooking turmeric powder…
I leave turmeric on my skin overnight (if I have blemishes) and I never had this issue. I think the turmeric powder has a bit of chilli powder mixed in it, because usually many grind turmeric in the same machine that they grind red chillies. But I am surprised it has been going on for months. But don't worry, take pure sandalwood paste and apply it on the area, it will be alright soon….
i just noticed that on many spices i buy there is a preservative in them called sodium sulfate or something. could it be this is also in the tumeric though not stated and this is what caused the burning? i didn't know spices had preservatives like curry powder, garam masala etc. it usually should be free from this but they're adding it…(Sodium sulfate is the sodium salt of sulfuric acid)your chili idea sounds possible too because they use same grinder for it….
Hi Ramya, how much turmeric 500 mg pills do i have to take for acnee? some say 4 pills/day others say 2-3 pills. i use turmeric powder organic with honey and yogurt paste for 2 days now but i don-t see any good changes; on the contrary today i woke up with more acne, so i thought to take turmeric pills too, i found jarrows ones , is it ok?
Hi, I have never used turmeric pills as we regularly use turmeric in all our dishes so I am not very familiar with the dosage. I use turmeric regularly for external application if I have breakouts, I make paste out of organic turmeric using water and apply it over the spots, I find it miraculously much smaller the next day itself. Next time try applying only turmeric paste instead of mixing it with honey and see whether you notice a positive change….
Hi, i just bought tulsi/tulasi powder but it says that may contain traces of sesame and nuts, shall i use it or not? I want to use one day turmeric + honey+yoghurt and the other day turmeric+tulsi , every day is it ok? I only let it on for 20 min i'm afraid to let it more because of stains
I am surprised that sesame seeds and nuts are added into tulsi powder! I would suggest using only pure tulsi leaf powder, better still make your own at home and store in the refrigerator. The packs you suggested are okay and usually even everyday use with these ingredients for years causes no harm. See how your skin feels after using these packs daily for a week or two and if you fell your skin feels good, continue using it…
hi again Ramya, im on 4th week with turmeric-yougurt and very little honey but they still come out. i noticed that if i put a very thin layer is ok but if i put a thick layer when i wash it in 30 min they already form new ones. why is that? you know? i also use a regime only with fruits and seeds for almost 3 moths now, i hope that will clean my inside body and cure this horrible desease.
Hi, I have never experienced this problem with turmeric at all, even if I use a very thick layer. But each one of us react differently to herbs and I am not sure why you are breaking out after using a thick layer of turmeric. A small suggestion: Try making your own turmeric paste and use it without honey and see how your skin reacts to it….
Hi, i tried to use just powder with boiled water but they do not form a paste so now i combine just yoghurt and turmeric powder but is the same. I am from romania so i can't find turmeric ground, i only find powder or caps. I just found on internet an indian food store in romania and i see they have tulsi leaves powder and turmeric powder to add in food. Are they good for mask????
I would suggest that you give the powders a try for making the mask, though not as effective as fresh leaves they are good. Usually tulsi leaves powder is not adulterated and while buying turmeric powder, check whether it is organic….
Hii..Ramya ma,m plz do suggest me for hiperpigmentation on my face n under eyes for last 6-7 years …I have took lots of medicines but all are in vain…m 29 years old girl so plz suggest me some effective tips….
Hello Arthi, Try drinking lots of water, reduce stress and eat healthy. For external application, I find fresh Aloe Vera gel applied on the skin is good for pigmented face, try applying regularly till you see results. Turmeric face packs also are also very good, try this turmeric face pack recipe at least weekly thrice, it is one of my favorites. Try these remedies and let me know how you feel….
My daughter is extremely tanned and is highly allergic to turmeric… Is there anything else I can apply on her to remove the tanning?
I would suggest applying pure Aloe Vera gel, it is very soothing and greatly helps tanned skin…
Can i add besan&rose water to this same recipe?
For treating acne, I would suggest just using the two ingredients…
Hai Ramya mam,i have already taken peeling treatment for acne.but now some scars are leaving there.is this recipe is better to use for scars and can i take this treatment?pls give me a fast rply
Yes, you can try this remedy for acne but I would suggest doing a small patch test as this turmeric pack burns initially when applied. Since you have already taken chemical treatment it might cause intense burning so please do patch test first…
HAI…my skin is oily and sensitive too.And my acne is like prickly heat.so can i use this recipe to treat this type of acne?bt i have tried this recipe twice and i felt burn.
Holy basil leaves in this recipe causes face burn but it will not harm the skin. But if your skin is very sensitive, I would suggest applying fresh sandalwood paste by rubbing a sandalwood bark on a sandalwood stone using rose water, it is very soothing and will greatly help…
I think not the basil leaves but wild turmeric makes my face burn.bcz when I applied the wild turmeric alone I felt the same.yet I am using the basil&turmeric recipe.but I feel no changes and my acne is increased.
In my experience I find both wild turmeric and holy basil(fresh ones) causes burning. I would suggest mixing normal organic turmeric powder with rice water as a paste and applying on acne, it will not cause any burning. But before that can you please confirm whether it is acne or prickly heat? If it is prickly heat, I would suggest using the rose water and sandalwood recipe mentioned above…
Hi Ramya,Would you please advice what might be suitable for Hyper-pigmentation of the face or also known as Melasma? I've read that Turmeric is a great aid but I have tried by itself long time ago and it burn so I removed quickly. I supposed, I needed to mixed perhaps with milk or Alo vera?I appreciate your advice.Thank you,Annie
Hi Annie, vitamin C serum (I have a recipe for it in the blog), apple cider vinegar mixed with little water and fresh Aloe Vera gel are the 3 remedies that will help with melasma. But try applying any one patiently everyday regularly to see results…
If we use wild turmeric with only water any problem?😇😇
You can use only wild turmeric with water for making this turmeric face mask but adding tulsi leaves makes it very very effective:)
Can I use neem powder along with tulsi n wild turmeric powder..m having oily as well as sensitive skin..
Yes, you can. All the 3 powders you mentioned will help treat acne and is good for oily skin. But do a patch test before applying all over the face as fresh tulsi leaves might cause burning sensation….
Hi mam..i tried applying turmeric nd tulsi leaves paste on my face for acne nd scars..but it caused a burning sensation so i removed it…plz suggest any measure for thus asap..plzzzzz
