Papaya juice is one of those juices that can be easily made at home but has wonderful benefits. Especially it’s well known for it’s use in treating fevers caused due to mosquitoes like dengue. Since dengue is spreading at a rapid pace here in Tamil Nadu, it will be very helpful if we get to know the different home remedies and treatments for doing at home.
There are two popular methods for treating dengue that have been proven through clinical research to be very effective for treating & preventing dengue. One is using nilavembu kudineer which is a blend of 9 different herbs with nilavembu (Andrographis Paniculata) as the main ingredient and the other is papaya leaf juice.
Papaya Leaf Juice & Dengue Fever:
The study that proved the effectiveness of papaya leaf juice for dengue was done on a 45 year old patient suffering from dengue. For the study 25 ml of the water extract of papaya was given to the patient twice a day for 5 consecutive days.
The platelet count and white blood cells count were taken and they had decreased significantly due to dengue. After the treatment the platelets increased from 55 to 168 and the white blood cells increased from 3.7 to 7. 7 which clearly proved the effectiveness of papaya juice for treating dengue.
The main thing to do when a person gets dengue is to hydrate themselves well and take either nilavembu kudineer or papaya juice. Also close monitoring of the platelet count is very important.

How To Make Papaya Leaf Juice At Home?
METHOD:
1. Collect a fresh papaya leaf, chose a leaf that is neither fully mature nor too young.
2. Wash it well under running water and cut only the green leafy part into small pieces.
3. Wash the mortar and pestle and grind the cut papaya leaf without adding any water.
4. Extract the juice by squeezing the ground mixture with your hands over a soup strainer. A large leaf will yield approximately 1 tbsp juice.
5. Mix it with honey and take the appropriate dosage.
6. Water decoction: The water decoction can also be used for treating dengue. The dosage used in the study was around 25 ml twice a day for a period of 5 days. It was made by boiling the cut papaya leaves in water till the color of the water changes.
NOTES:
- The leaf juice is very very bitter so before giving children prepare them for it.
- Though this remedy is very effective, I would also strongly suggest keeping a close watch on the platelet count under the guidance of a physician.
- If suffering from dengue, please don’t forget to hydrate yourself well.

In our village always some houses will have nilavembu plant so I have never bothered looking for it outside. But I would suggest asking in government run herb nurseries (mooligai pannai). The leaves can be used for snake bites, you can read about the study that was done to prove the anti venom activity of nilavembu here: http://ispub.com/IJTO/6/1/8054
