Oatmeal baths are very very soothing, it greatly helps reduce the inflammation and itching caused due to diseases like eczema, hives, chickenpox, etc. It can be used even for children to treat diaper rash. Some times even natural ingredients can irritate when we use it on inflamed or sunburned skin. But oatmeal baths are very relaxing and if you add the appropriate herbs, it does wonders to inflamed skin.
The best thing I like about oatmeal bath is it can be used for treating various skin diseases from a common rash to eczema. Since it is very gentle it can be used for treating diaper rash in children too. If you have a severe skin infection that makes your skin itch uncontrollably, try a oatmeal bath. It can be done for the specific parts too.
For eg, if you have an infection in the legs, fill a small tub with water and add the oatmeal blend and immerse your legs in it. If appropriate herbs are added to it will help fight off the infection along with easing the inflammation and itching. I have given a general recipe for oatmeal bath below with step by step pictures but for treating a specific problem, try adding appropriate herbs to the bath as suggested.
Oatmeal Bath Benefits and Uses:
1. Oatmeal Bath For Eczema:
The itching caused by eczema especially during the winter season can be really worse. Try an oatmeal bath daily during winter season using ground oatmeal, baking soda and few drops of pure neem oil. This bath can be used even for young children who are suffering from eczema.
2. Oatmeal Bath For Sunburn:
For sunburn a soothing oatmeal bath is the best. Try an oatmeal bath made with oatmeal, dried lavender and few drops of lavender essential oil. This bath will help ease the sunburn and will greatly help reduce the redness and inflammation caused due to sunburn.
3. Oatmeal Bath For Itchy Skin:
So many things can cause skin itching and especially if you are an outdoor person you will experience it a lot often. If the itching gets severe, try a soothing oatmeal bath using pesticide free rose petals and rose essential oil like given below in the recipe, it will greatly help.
4. Oatmeal Bath For Chicken Pox:
I have had chicken pox when I was younger and the constant itching was unbearable. We generally place fresh neem leaves on the bed and make the person lie on it. We can also try oatmeal bath by mixing oatmeal, baking soda and fresh neem leaves into the bath water, it will greatly help relieve the itching.
5. Oatmeal Bath For Diaper Rash:
If the child has a diaper rash, try not to use disposable diapers for a few days and switch over to cotton diapers. Also try a warm oatmeal hip bath till they feel better. Add only oatmeal and baking soda for the bath.

Oatmeal will help treat dry skin very effectively. I would suggest adding a blend of oatmeal, full fat milk powder and few drops of any unrefined oil and adding it to your bath water, it will soften dry skin really well.
8. Oatmeal Bath For Rashes:
Oatmeal bath can be used for treating all kinds of rashes. To use oatmeal bath for treating shingles, take oatmeal in a thin muslin bag, you can also add in soothing herbs like chamomile to it. Now tie the oatmeal bag of to the tap and let the water flow through it. The water will be a bit cloudy but it is very very soothing, use the water for your bath.
9. Oatmeal Bath For Shingles:
Oatmeal bath will benefit people who are suffering from shingles too. Oatmeal bath bath has a soothing effect and helps relieve the itching. To use oatmeal as a remedy for shingles, powder 1/4 cup of oatmeal in a dry mixer to a fine powder and mix it in water. Soak yourself in the bath and after the bath, pat yourself dry and apply fresh aloe vera gel.
10. Oatmeal Bath For Dogs:
Not only for us humans but oatmeal bath can help our pets too. If your dog suffers from constant itching, you can try a simple oatmeal bath mixed with few drops of tea tree oil. If he is a puppy, it will be easier to get him into a small tub and give him the bath. For bigger dogs, work the blend into the skin coat, wait for 10 to 15 minutes and then give a bath.
Oatmeal Bath Recipe:
METHOD:
1. Collect fresh pesticide free rose petals and shade dry them.
2. Dry them till crisp. I have used paneer variety roses here….
3. Powder the dried rose petals and oatmeal to a fine powder in a blender.
4. Add baking soda to it, mix well and store. To use, add about 1/4 cup of oatmeal bath blend and 5 drops of rose essential oil in the bath water.
5. You can also use whole oats and dried rose petals. Take them in muslin cloth along with baking soda and tie it the mouth of the tap….
NOTES:
- If the rose petals have moisture in them the blend will spoil sooner.
- I love roses so I have added them here but you can add your favorite blends.
- Try to use warm water to dissolve the bath blend.
- After adding the blend into the water, mix well to dissolve it fully.
- For dry skin, add full fat milk powder along with the blend.
- Try to grind the blend to a fine powder, since my rose petals were really dry, I could grind it very finely into a powder…..

Hi, Thank you for this wonderful resource. My 8yr old son suffers from eczema on his buttocks, and I apply tea tree oil to his itchy spots each evening – which has a dramatically positive result, by the way.As you know, eczema can take many different forms, and one night he had unusual (for him) red, stinging welts on the back of his knees.I tried several different topical analgesics on his welts, even cremes for eczema, and they all caused him great discomfort and stinging. Finally, I just went with my gut and made a paste with cornstarch and water, applied it, and it immediately soothed him. After about twenty minutes we removed it because he felt better.Oatmeal soaks are a popular remedy for eczema discomfort. Yet bathing for any length of time is discouraged. So my question is, should he develop these stinging welts again, can I apply an oatmeal paste, and get the same benefits of a soak?Thank you again for your wonderful blog.
You can apply oatmeal paste for him, it will greatly soothe his irritated skin just like the bath…
