DIY Recipe: How to Make Homemade Ice Pack

Ice packs always come in handy, especially if we have young children at home, as they keep getting hurt often. Ice packs reduce the inflammation in the affected area and usually it works great for minor injuries. Ice packs can be made with variety of things from rice to frozen green peas. Last week I got a minor burn. Usually I have a bag of frozen peas in my freezer and I used that.

But the problem with the frozen peas is that it was all lumpy and it did not mold well into the affected area. We do get reusable ice pack in the stores. You can store them in the freezer and once you use it, you can refreeze them again. But we can make equally effective ice packs at home.

This homemade ice pack does not freeze hard as it contains alcohol and molds perfectly into the affected area. It can also be stored in the freezer and reused again and again. To make this ice pack, you need rubbing alcohol / surgical spirit. Nowadays, you can get rubbing alcohol in medical stores very easily. Mix 1 part rubbing alcohol with 3 parts water and pour into zip lock bags and freeze.

The rubbing alcohol will not let the water freeze solid. To use, take the frozen bag out of the freezer and wrap it in a cloth and use on the affected area. You can use this ice pack multiple times in a day on the affected area. Once you have used it, you can refreeze the bags again for later use. This homemade ice pack is very inexpensive to make and lasts for quite some time.
