DIY How to Make Henna Hair Oil for Hair Growth

Henna is a wonderful ingredient to use for our hair and this traditional henna hair oil made with henna leaves and coconut oil is very good for the hair. I have a henna tree in my home and I love to use the  fresh henna leaves for all my preparations. The smell of freshly plucked henna leaves is so amazing and refreshing.

This homemade henna hair oil is wonderful for strengthening the hair roots and it also treats minor scalp infections. This henna hair oil is best made during summer time, when you get plenty of sunlight. Regular scalp massage with this hair oil will arrest hair fall and stimulate new hair growth. This oil has got homemade virgin coconut oil as the base. In my personal opinion, coconut oil is the best oil for hair and if you use chemical free, homemade oil regularly, you will notice a nice difference in your hair.

To make this oil, collect fresh henna leaves and wash it well. Grind the leaves in a blender along with little water to make it into a thick paste. Take the paste and make it into small rounds, place it in a plate and sun dry till crisp. Heat coconut oil in a pan and add the dried henna balls to it and once the sizzling sound stops, switch off.

Let the oil cool completely, strain and pour it glass bottles. This oil can be used as a daily application oil, hair massage oil or as a pre shampoo treatment. To use as a pre shampoo treatment, warm the oil slightly in a small pan. Take the oil in your fingers and massage it well all over the scalp. The oil has to be warm , not hot when applying this oil.

After a good and gentle hair massage with this oil, let it soak in the hair for at least 30 minutes. Wash it off with a mild shampoo, followed by a good hair conditioner. After this hair treatment, you will feel very refreshed and your hair will be very soft and manageable. You will also get deep sleep that day because of the massage, which will relax and refresh you. Enjoy making this henna hair oil at home!

How To Make Henna Hair Oil:

 METHOD:
1. Pluck fresh henna leaves and clean it well. Grind the leaves in a mixer to a smooth mixture, using very little water.

2. Make small rounds out of the mixture and spread it on a plate to dry. Dry it in hot sun till the rounds are completely dry.

3. Heat coconut oil in a pan in a low flame and once hot, add the rounds.

4. It will start sizzling immediately, let it sizzle in low flame.

6.Once the sizzling stops switch off.

7. Let the oil cool, strain and store it in glass bottles.

NOTES:

  • If you add too much of water while grinding, you will not be able to make rounds.
  • Try to use freshly plucked leaves and homemade coconut oil for best results.
  • The whole thing should be done in a low flame, else the rounds will burn easily.
  • Make sure not to fill the pan to the brim with oil, it will spill over when it sizzles.
  • This oil stores well for 2 to 3 months at room temperature.

The whole point of oil making is to infuse the oils with the essence of the herbs. If the herbs are of good quality (not sprayed with pesticides) then regardless of the method, it will work great……..:)

Can I mix coconut oil, sesame oil and castor oil ??? I asked this question to everyone but they were confusing me plz ramya ma'am tell me your opinion…..I need all the three oils vitamins and minerals ??? Can I mix these three carrier oil ??? Is there any side effects by combining these three oils ???

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      July 28, 2015 / 3:04 am

Combining these 3 oils are fine and there are no side effects but if you add too much of castor oil, the oil will be too sticky. I would suggest mixing equal quantities of unrefined coconut oil and sesame oil and 1/4 measure or less of castor oil….

hi ramya .i live in blore. i ve hair thinning problem. hairfall is more in the crown area.baldness is visible nowadays .pls suggest me some remedies.

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      August 18, 2015 / 5:36 pm

Hi Uma, so many factors cause hair fall – deficiencies, stress, like you mentioned hard water, allergies and illness. Though external application of hair oils will condition the hair, it can only go so far. Try to find the root cause of the problem, (check for deficiencies, notice whether you are stressed) once you find the root cause it will be easier to treat it. In the mean time try applying fenugreek hair mask from the blog weekly thrice, it will greatly nourish the hair…

How to use dried henna powder for henna hair oil?? Plz suggest me..i have hairfall prblem

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      August 26, 2015 / 12:32 am

Hi Akhila, I have always used fresh henna leaves and don't know how effective the henna powder will be for making the oil. I would suggest making a small batch and see if it works for you. To make the oil, mix both the powder and the oil in a pan and heat on very very low flame till nice aroma wafts, switch off and strain. Try to do the whole process in a very low flame else it will burn easily…

Hi Ramya, i am a punjabi girl, i used to have very thick and long hairs, but now they are lifeless, i have left 1/10th proportion only, I am studying and it has created too much stress, i had depression and panic attacks which started this may due to study only but thay certainly lead to loads of hair loss. I started using Kesh Nikhar soap, which does not seem to ne worth using now.. can you please help me.. i have less hair on crown area. depression is now curing, but due to hair thinning and falling, i am in huge stress, there is no other problem i am having.. please please suggest something. Or any doctor.. please

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      September 17, 2015 / 5:12 am

Please don't worry as it will only lead to more hair fall. Start applying fenugreek hair mask from the blog each time you have hair wash, this will nourish and strengthen the hair roots. Along with it try regular hair massage with anyone of the homemade oils from the blog, this will help you relax and at the same time condition the hair. Also try to eat healthy and take a course of supplements after checking for deficiencies. Do this regularly for a few months and you will start seeing results very soon…..

I have been using off the shelf hair oil henna with lemon for now 3 months and to my surprise the bald patch where the crown area is has now got new growth of hair.I apply it on my head at night and cover pillow with hand towel before going to sleep.I wash my hair next morning. This has worked on my hair and I am truly surprised. This oil and yoga class were started at the same time so I reckon less stress and henna with lemon hair oil combination has been great in stimulating new hair growth in area of head that was mainly bald..

I would suggest not using turmeric for hair oil preparation otherwise it will be a good hair oil for treating hair loss. Also try using pure unrefined sesame oil fro best results and keep the mixed oil under hot sun to help henna release the essence…

People who are prone to getting sinus infection and cold easily should be careful while using henna, that is why we always add a few drops of eucalyptus oil while mixing henna paste. Adding eucalyptus oil greatly helps. I would suggest using this henna oil, since the leaves are sun dried and then cooked in oil, it will not cause any side effects…

I had been watching and readying you blog since one month now, and thank to your very helpful advice am on the right track of getting my hair healthy. it's true what you said if we all start getting back to basic and the natural life style we will defiantly see a change unfortunalty i had to learn it the hard way after my hair was beyond damage and fried up. I wand to ask if you don't mind since am suffering from premature grey hair I have been coloring it but know I would like to use henna but am afraid it won't cover the white hair or make more damage to my already fragile hair, will using this hair oil color my hair or should i use the henna mask for that instead. Thanks for changing my live style and having a true impact of how I view aravedic remedy.best regardsLayla
