Asafoetida is an amazing spice and I think you will never find an Indian household without this wonderful spice. I personally love this spice and we add it to all dishes that are difficult to digest. But a little goes a long way with this spice and I have to add, this spice is an amazing ingredient for home remedies, as it is very handy and very effective.
A few days back, my cousin was telling me that she will bear any pain except toothache, because she went through a difficult time with a dental procedure. I truly agree and the worst thing is when we get toothache, most of the time, we are not able to visit the dentist immediately.
This effective home remedy with asafoetida is one of the best treatment that we can do at home to ease the pain. This home remedy treats the infection and reduces the pain, till we are able to go to the doctor. Sometimes this treatment itself solves the problem very effectively.
This remedy is made by soaking a piece of asafoetida in lemon juice for 5 minutes, then heated till it is completely dissolved in lemon juice in a low flame. Let it cool a bit, now take a cotton bud, dip it in the mixture and place it on the affected tooth. Usually the pain subsides, when you are doing this treatment, but make sure to keep it in the tooth at least for some time, for the treatment to be effective.
Asafoetida has a strong odor, but after this treatment, you can brush your teeth for it to go away, but I would recommend having the paste on the affected tooth, till the pain subsides completely. Lime juice is also very effective for tooth pain and try using fresh lime juice, not the bottled one. You get asafoetida either as a powder or as a block, but for this remedy use the one that comes in block form.
How To Use Asafoetida For Tooth Pain:
METHOD:
1.Take a small piece of asafoetida and soak it in lemon juice for 5 to 10 minutes, the asafoetida will soften.
2. Heat the mixture in a small pan in a low flame till the asafoetida dissolves in the lime juice.
3. Let it cool a bit and then take a cotton bud, dip it in the mixture and then apply on the affected area.
NOTES:
- Don’t boil it, just heat it till it is dissolved.
- Apply it on the affected area and wait for some time for it to be effective.
- The mixture should be thick, not too runny.

Ramya please post something with bhringaraj leaves. It is my latest obsession. It is almost non existent in my place but i traveled 50 miles and after aimlessly wandering and bothering locals finally managed to pull out some from a none to clean drain. my cook says that it can colour hair better than henna. I was also told about its effficacy in curing tooth infections as well as ear festers. But I await your expert opinion.
Aparna, Your enthusiasm for herbs is making me very happy :). We call it karisalanganni in Tamil and the oil is very famous here. Unfortunately I don't have any bhringraj plants in my garden right now. Please give me some days to collect & post it in the blog….
