Ratanjot Hair Oil Recipe / Alkanet Root Hair Oil

Ratanjot (Hindi name) was used to add natural deep red color in North Indian dishes for years. Sadly, it is replaced by synthetic red colors now. We call it “Vembalampattai” in Tamil. It is called “Alkanet” in English. The roots of Alkanets are used as a natural red dye and it is grown widely in Europe for it. The alkanet root is also used in the treatment of various diseases like wounds, bites, pain relief, fevers and stings. It is easily available every where.

We make a wonderful hair oil with ratanjot/alkanet root. This hair oil is very good in conditioning the hair and helps to prevent premature greying (ila narai in Tamil), if used regularly. I always try to find the scientific and English names of the ingredients before posting, so the readers will find it easy to find the ingredients. I was breaking my head, to find the Hindi and English names of vembalampattai for almost a month.

I even thought of skipping this post, but this oil is too good to be skipped. Finally, I found the names last week and here I am with the post. This oil should be only be made, during the hot summer months. To make this oil, powder the dried alkanet root into small pieces. Just crush them with your fingers, alkanet root crumbles very easily.

Don’t crush it very fine, else you will find it hard to strain the oil. Pour coconut oil on top of the crumbled alkanet root and keep it under the hot sun. The color of the oil will change to red. Once the color changes to deep red, strain the oil and store it in glass bottles. This oil should be used regularly for best results. People who are suffering from premature greying will greatly benefit from this oil.

Ratanjot Hair Oil Recipe / Alkanet Root Hair Oil

METHOD:
1. This is ratanjot/alkanet root and it is dark reddish in color. The alkanet root you see in the main picture on top was taken after the alkanet root was broken into pieces.

2. Crumble the dried alkanet root into small pieces using your hands. This crumbles very easily.

3. Pour coconut oil on top of the crumbled alkanet.

4. Keep it under the hot sun, till the color of the oil changes to dark red color. One day in the hot sun is enough. Let it cool, strain and use.

NOTES:

  • Try to make this oil, only during the hot summer months.
  • Apply this oil regularly, for best results.
  • Try to use virgin coconut oil, to make this oil.
  • Keep it in the sun, till the color changes to dark beet red.

Thank you for your this post, I live in England and like to make natural products. Alkanet is used to colour soaps over here, from a pink to a deep purple colour.

Dear Ramya,I am interested to make Ratanjot hair oil. Please let me know from where I can get odorless Coconut oil? Secondly I want the fragrance similar to JABAKUSUM Hair oil of Kolkata, which is based on Ratanjot.Kindly help me.

    • Ramya Venkateshwaran
      February 7, 2015 / 5:25 am

Dear Mala, coconut oil will becomes odorless only when it is refined but then it loses all it's nutrients. I have not used the oil that you mentioned but the best thing is to make the ratanjot oil with pure virgin coconut oil and then add the fragrance that compliments it because I feel the effect of the oil on the hair is more important than the fragrance. I would also suggest adding essential oils to the oil than artificial fragrances……

Hi, I have seen my neighbor reverse her premature greying using curry leaf oil but her premature greying was in early stages. But I would suggest using either one of these oils even if you had white hair for a long time as they are the best natural treatments I know for premature greying. They not only prevent premature greying but condition and strengthen the hair roots as well. For 250 ml of pure coconut oil try using 5 sprigs of curry leaves, the curry leaves should be fully immersed in the oil…..

Hello mam,can I add ratanjot to coconut oil and heat the oil to add colour because oil could not be melt only by keeping outside in this foggy weather. Is this safe to heat the oil and add ratanjot to it?

Though I prefer to heat the oil by sun direct method, you can heat the oil in direct flame too..

Hello Ramya,I am facing multiple problems for my hair. I am 25 years old and my hair are getting reduced from the front right and left sides above the forehead. My hair quality is dry, weak and thin. I have read all your hair masks, oils and now i have some questions. You are advising to have oil massage regularly and after oil massage i need to shampoo my hair as u said. But if i use shampoo regularly it makes my hair more thin, weak and dry. I am planning to oil massage my hair regularly and do the hair mask think once in a week or should i use hair mask also regularly? And then i need to shampoo regularly to wash oil off. And which oil is good to cure hairfall problem and for good density of hair, olive oil or coconut oil? And if i dont use shampoo for 4-5 days, i get dandruff in my hair. So if i oil massage my hair regularly for strong roots and density of hair, i need to shampoo also regularly which will make my hair dry rough and weak. So please have a look at all my hair problems and suggest me the best treatment. I get only 2-3 hours on weekdays and i am free on weekends.

Hi, I would suggest oil bath weekly twice, it will greatly improve the condition of the hair, reduce stress and prevent dryness (you can read about traditional oil bath in the blog). I would suggest unrefined coconut oil for daily application oil and for oil bath unrefined sesame oil. You can use towel soaked in hot water after oiling too. I would also suggest using regular usage of hair mask, these tips will greatly improve the condition of your hair if done regularly….

Please don't worry, first I would suggest checking for nutrient deficiencies like anemia, vitamin D or zinc, etc. If you do have please take supplement after consulting a doctor. Hair loss can also be due to stress or scalp infections like dandruff or even due to stress. If you find out the cause it will be very easy for you to treat the problem very effectively….

Ratanjot helps prevents scalp problems that causes hair fall like premature greying and dandruff but it will not be helpful of initial baldness. You can try for it in herb stores (stores that sell pooja items). You can use it sparingly for oily scalp too….

If you want to add fresh amla, you can grate it, dry out the moisture by placing it under hot sun. Then add the dried amla pieces to the oil and sun dry again (that is how I do)….
