After covid 19 pandemic, usage of kabasura kudineer has increased manyfold especially here in Tamil Nadu. Kabasura kudineer is mainly used for treating all the respiratory problems and since covid-19 affects the lungs, kabasura kudineer has been recommended by ayurvedic practitioners both as a preventive measure and also as a part of the treatment of covid-19.
What is Kabasura Kudineer?
It is a siddha formulation that contains 15 famous herbs each with multiple medicinal uses. It is very famous here in Tamil Nadu and we call the powder kabasura kudineer chooranam. We use it for treating respiratory problems like cough, cold, breathing problems, fever and also for improving immunity.
The word kaba sura kudineer means water that reduces excess accumulation of kapha which causes respiratory problems. Kabasura kudineer has antiviral, analgesic, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antipyretic, immunomodulatory and hepatoprotective properties.
Ingredients & Medicinal Uses
1. The first ingredient is dry ginger (Chukku in Tamil) whose botanical name is Zingiber officinale. The main active compound present in dry ginger is zingiberene. We use it for treating indigestion, asthma and other respiratory problems. Ginger is effective for treating vomiting, fever, pain, reducing high blood sugar levels and inflammation.
2. The second ingredient is long pepper whose botanical name is Piper longum. We call it thippili in Tamil, the main active compound is piperine. It is used for treating cough and asthma and it also aids weight loss, reduces pain and inflammation and has anti cancer, anti microbial and anti hyperlipidemic properties too.
3. The third ingredient siruthekku whose botanical name is Clerodendrum serratum. It’s main active compound is carvacol. It has powerful anti cancer, wound healing, anti inflammatory, anti oxidant and anti bacterial properties, it is also an anti allergen.
4. The fourth ingredient is kalmegh. We call it nilavembu in Tamil, its botanical name is Andrographis paniculata. The major active compound is andrographalide. It purifies the blood and the liver and has anti viral, anti cancer, blood sugar lowering, anti malarial and anti venom properties.
5. The fifth ingredient is vattathiruppi, it’s botanical name is Sida acuta. The major active compound present in it is carvacol. It is very commonly found all over India and is used to treat all respiratory problems along with nervous disorders. It has been proven to have anti microbial, anti ulcer, anti inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective and also fever and pain reducing properties.
6. The sixth ingredient is korai kizhangu whose botanical name is Cyperus rotundus. The major compound present in it is amentoflavone and it has many medicinal uses which includes anti convulsant, anti androgenic, anti obesity, anti cancer, anti malarial, anti diabetic, cholesterol lowering, anti convulsant, anti inflammatory and protective properties (hepato, cardio and neuro).
7. The next ingredient is cloves, we call it kirambu in Tamil. The botanical name is Syzygium aromaticum. The main active compound present in it is eugenol. It has powerful anti microbial properties along with antioxidant, insecticidal, pain reducing, antioxidant and anti carminative properties.
8. The next ingredient is sirukanchori, it’s botanical name is Tragia involucrate. The main active compound present in it is costunolide. It is used to treat bronchitis, get rid of intestinal worms and skin problems. It has anti microbial, anti fertility, fever and pain reducing, anti epileptic, anti inflammatory, anti diabetic and antioxidant properties.
9. The next ingredient is akkirakaram whose botanical name is Anacyclus pyrethrum, its main active compound is pyrethrin. It is used as an aphrodisiac and along with it, it is also used for treating asthma, headache, pain and nerve weakness. It has pain relieving, anti bacterial, anti diabetic and anti inflammatory properties.
10. The next ingredient is mulliver whose botanical name is Hygrophilla auriculata. The main active compound of it is apigenin. It is an aphrodisiac and it helps reduce fever, inflammation and pain.
11. The next ingredient is kadukkai whose botanical name is Terminalia chebula. It is called haritaki in Hindi and the main active compound is chebulic acid. It is a very powerful antioxidant and is considered to be the mother of all herbs. It has powerful anti viral, anti bacterial and anti fungal properties, it also helps repel intestinal worms and treats constipation and stomach ulcer.
12. The next ingredient is adathoda whose botanical name is Adathoda vasica. The main compound is vasicine, it is used for treating all bleeding problems, asthma (it is a bronchodilator), wounds, ulcer and allergies. It also has powerful insecticidal and anti microbial properties.
13. The next ingredient is karpooravalli whose botanical name is Coleus amboinicus. The main active compound of it is myrtenol. We use karpuravalli for treating all cold and cough related ailments at home and it is very very effective. We make soup and a syrup out of the leaves for treating respiratory problems.
14. The next ingredient is kostum whose botanical name is Saussurea lappa. The main active compound is costunolide. It is used for treating respiratory problems, arthritis, ulcer and gout. It has anti inflammatory, hepatic protective, anti viral and anti convulsant properties.
15. The next ingredient is seenthil kodi whose botanical name is Tinospora cordifolia. The main active compound is cordifolioside. It helps reduce fever and has powerful antioxidant, anti cancer, anti inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.
How To Make Kabasura Kudineer?
To make the kudineer, take around 1 teaspoon of the powder along with 240 ml (1 cup) of water and boil in medium heat till it reduces to almost 50 ml (around 10 minutes). Strain and add honey if desired and then consume after food. Try to consume it within 3 hours of preparation. Kabasura Kudineer Chooranam Dosage:
For adults, it is around 50 to 60 ml after food. For children above 5 years, it is 20ml and for children around three to five years, it is 10 ml. Usually it is advised to drink it for 14 days to improve immunity. This is the general recommended dosage by ayurvedic practitioners but it is best to consult an ayurvedic physician before consuming.
Kabasura Kudineer Side Effects:
If taken in the recommended dosage and for the recommended period of time according to the age there have been no reported side effects. But if you have any underlying health conditions, it is best to consume it after consulting and ayurvedic physician. Pregnanat women should consume kabasura kudineer only under the guidance of an ayurvedic physician.
