15 Top Uses Of Camphor Oil For Hair, Skin & Health

camphor oil uses

Camphor oil | Kapoor Oil refers to both camphor essential oil also referred to as Cinnamomum Camphora Oil and edible camphor dissolved in coconut oil. Both have wonderful health benefits and medicinal uses. The scientific name of camphor is Cinnamomum Camphora, it is a white waxy substance that is highly flammable. There are two types of camphor, one is synthetically derived from turpentine and the other is derived from trees.

Usually plant based camphor is got from Camphor Laurel tree and along with other trees like Indian Kapur tree. We call the camphor got from the trees Pachai Karpooram in Tamil, Karpur in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati & Bengali, Pachai Kalpooram in Malayalam, Karpooram in Telugu, Karpoora in Kannada, Kappur in Punjabi and Karpuram in Sanskrit. The synthetically derived camphor is called just Karpooram in Tamil. Camphor essential oil is got by steaming the wood, stump and branches of Camphor Laurel tree which is then rectified and filter pressed.

Types Of Camphor Oil:

After filter pressing, three different types of camphor oil are produced. They are white, yellow and brown camphor oil. The three oils vary in safrole content with brown camphor oil containing around 80 %, yellow camphor oil containing around 10 to 20 % and the white camphor oil containing 8 % or less.

Out of these three only white camphor oil is used for therapeutic purposes and both yellow and brown camphor oils are considered toxic and carcinogenic due to the high amounts of safrole present. Even the white camphor oil should be used with caution as it is a very very powerful oil.

Camphor oil is mainly used for cold, flu, bringing down the inflammation, sprains, arthritis, aches and pains and also as a wonderful insect repellent. Plain camphor oil that is sold in Indian markets is different from camphor essential oil, it is just edible camphor mixed in coconut oil at different concentrations.

Camphor Oil Chemical Constituents:

The main chemical constituents found in camphor oil are camphene, a-pinene, b-pinene, sabinene, phellandrene, limonene, 1,8-cineole, p-cymene, camphor, y-terpene, terpineole, furfural, linalool, bornyl acetate, terpinen-4-ol, caryophyllene, borneol, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, piperitone, geranial, methyl cinnamate and safrole.

Camphor Oil Chemical Properties:

Camphor oil has analgesic (pain relieving), antiseptic, nasal decongestant, mild expectorant, counter irritant, rubefacient (that causes increased blood flow and redness to the part of the skin it is applied), cough suppressant, anti spasmodic, anti bacterial and anti fungal and anti itching properties.

How To Make Camphor Oil?

We can make camphor oil at home in 3 ways, one is by heating coconut oil with edible camphor in slow flame till it is dissolved completely. The second is by mixing camphor essential oil in coconut oil. The third is by mixing synthetic camphor in coconut oil. I would suggest using camphor essential oil mixed in coconut oil for hair care and edible camphor mixed with coconut oil for massaging the body for treating pains and aches. I would suggest not using synthetic camphor oil at all for hair and skin care but you can use it as an insecticide.

Camphor Oil Side Effects:

Camphor oil should not be used in high concentration externally for both hair and skin care as it is toxic and it also enters our blood stream very quickly. Usually the safe recommended  dosage is around 3 to 11 % so when making camphor oil at home always remember not to go above 10 % concentration. Always keep camphor oil away from children and don’t use it on open wounds and cuts. Pregnant women should not use camphor oil in large doses.

Where To Buy Camphor Essential Oil?

You can buy camphor essential oil online easily, 100 ml costs around 500 rupees. When buying camphor essential oil make sure to specifically ask for white camphor essential oil and always mix it with a carrier oil and use.
